Fragmented Memory is an installation that brings together a series of works that explore feelings of nostalgia. The imagery featured within the work explores popular culture and symbols focusing on widely recognisable iconography. The subject of the works is abstracted down into associated colours and symbols.

These abstract, simplified shapes are the recognisable shorthand of day-to-day objects and structures.

This project started with explorations of abstract expressionism, painting present feelings where connections were made to the imagery the artist has grown up with. This developed into explorations of abstract impressionism through installation, implying the space of the artist's childhood bedroom. Through nostalgia and piecing together memories, the fragmented imagery in the installation suggests how our memories of things can be altered.

The small elements scattered throughout the gallery space act as moments of familiarity before seeing the two main installation spaces. These spaces come together to make a room but are pulled into these two adjacent areas, to continue this fragmentation and suggest that these things come to you at different times.

I aim to bring out a sense of nostalgia in those who connect to the imagery.

But for those who have not grown up with this imagery the implied bedroom space may be enough to draw that connection. Colour choice and universal imagery provide clues to piecing the installation together, much like how simply connecting a colon and a closing bracket in a yellow colour can suggest happiness whereas an opening bracket in blue can convey sadness.
